Beating the Odds

This is a sponsored post from Disney and BlogHer.

It feels great to watch underdogs beat the odds in a movie. Especially if those underdogs happen to be a woman and her horse. I always feel a sense of “Yeah! You go!” and I leave the theater completely inspired to conquer the world. That's why I am so happy to participate in this Disney Secretariat review AND a great BlogHer giveaway where one of my readers will win a $100 gift card! Keep reading. I'll tell you how to enter in a minute.

It was stories like Secretariat that kept me striving for a better future, even back in the day when I was a single mom on welfare determined to get a college degree.

Let me give you a bit of my back story. Neither of my parents went to college. In fact, no one in my family had ever gone to college. College wasn’t even on my radar, because I’d been taught that only kids with lots of family money could afford college. I had no idea grants, scholarships or student loans existed.

Then, I learned about Pell grants. I could go to college! But by then I was a 19 year old divorced mom trying to support her child on minimum wage supplemented by food stamps and a small welfare check. Nevertheless, I made college a top goal and enrolled for night classes at a community college. I didn’t even make it through the first semester. A job combined with caring for a toddler combined with night classes was too much for me at the time. The major I had chosen, accounting, was all wrong for me, too.

Fast forward five years. I had worked my way up from the mail room to an ad executive at a daily newspaper. That success gave me a great deal of confidence. I was ready to try college, again.

This time, I rearranged my schedule to go after my goal. I am more alert during the day, so I took a night job and went to community college classes during the day. I also knew that I wanted to do something creative – no numbers this time! I set my sights on the School of Journalism at the University of Colorado. Two years at the community college followed by two years at CU along with several scholarships and student loans, I went on to graduate first in my class! And it was easy. Yes, I said easy! Once I had set my goal, nothing was going to stop me. Like Secretariat I was going to cross that finish line no matter what.

These days, I have a new goal: to be a bona fide successful top selling author. I can't wait to see Secretariat, in theaters on Oct. 8, and be inspired to make my goal a reality.

Now, on to how you can win a $100 Visa gift card! First, visit the BlogHer.com special offers page to read all the great bloggers participating. Then, click here to see the Official Rules of this giveaway.

Then, finally, leave a comment here to be entered for the $100 gift card. I repeat that ONE OF MY READERS will win it!

It sounds like we had the same parents! I had no idea that a kid like me could go to college. I finally enrolled after I couldn't find a job and got tired of answering the question, "What are you doing now?" with "Nothing." Although I did earn an associates degree, I am still (at age 47) working on my bachelors! Your story was encouraging.

I became a teenage mom at 17 and married my son's father. I overcame the statistics and finished high school with my diploma, but it was tough. Classmates were cruel and there were plenty who pointed and laughed at me. Many times I wanted to give up and just take the test and get my GED. In my heart, though, I wanted that diploma and the chance to walk across the stage and be handed what took so hard to get. I kept my focus and graduated...while my son and mother sat in the audience and watched me walk across the stage. While the marriage was a mistake, my son never was. He graduated college with honors 2 years ago and I couldn't be prouder of him. What I learned and always taught him was that your education is something no one can ever take away from you.

I quit my job when in my late 20's when I realized my career was not fulfilling my spirit. It was hard because I had a good salary and knew I'd have to spend all my savings to go back to get my masters, but I took the leap and got my teaching degree. I was very broke for a very long time, but now, 15 years later I know it was the best decision of my life.
